PanAfrican Energy Tanzania (PAT) is careful to ensure that its activities are environmentally appropriate, meet environmental regulations and contribute to sustainable outcomes for both the company and the Songo Songo Island community.
PAT is also committed to improving the quality of life of the island residents. For the past few years, PanAfrican has been developing and rolling out health and education programmes that have improved the health of the Songo Songo Islanders and provided education for the youth, equipping for new teachers and scholarships that have enabled island students to complete high school.
Songo Songo Island Education
Resources Improvement
PanAfrican Energy provides assistance on an ongoing basis to the community school on Songo Songo Island. For the past few years, the company has assisted in upgrading the local elementary school facilities, as well as providing much needed educational materials and equipment.
Currently, PanAfrican is supporting the kindergarten, which is providing early learning facilities for children aged between 3 and 6 years. In addition, these children will be provided with meals and health check-ups.
The Company has recruited a professional instructor for the learning centre, to provide English language instruction, computer training and entrepreneurship skills to young adults on the island.

Scholarships
In order to boost local capacity in education in a sustainable manner, PanAfrican Energy has also sponsored three teachers to attend Teacher Training College in Dar es Salaam, with the expectation upon graduating they will lend their skills to the improvement of the welfare of the Songo Songo Island community.
One beneficiary graduated in February 2011, while the other two are expected to complete their studies and graduate in 2012.
Furthermore, PanAfrican Energy is sponsoring ten students from the island to attend Secondary School in Dar es Salaam.
Life skill programmes
PanAfrican members of staff dedicate their personal time to assist in the children's clinic, where they provide community training in maternal healthcare, HIV awareness, nutrition and vaccination.
In addition, they provide life skills training to students of Standard 4 and 6 on the prevention of HIV/ AIDS and the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.
Community Work
The company also has two permanent members of staff on the island who are committed to engaging exclusively in community work.
